LIFX Color 1000 A19 Wi-Fi Smart LED Light Bulb (Review)

A couple weeks ago, my family and I went on a short little weekend camping trip for my birthday. I was really excited to break away from life for a short while and just spend some down time with the ones that I love most. With the exception of some pretty rude campsite neighbors, we had a great trip and enjoyed spending time with one another.

While we were there, I had hoped to be able to do a little product testing for a few items. The one item that was probably the most diverse to do a review for in a camping 20151110_180005setting was the LIFX Color 1000 A19 LED light bulb. My plans were to utilize the bulb as our camping area light, then control it with the Android app on my Samsung Galaxy Note5. I wanted to use it to control the light around our campfire, along with dimming the light as we all went to sleep. I figured I could also use it in the middle of the night if our baby woke up or if one of us needed to venture out to use the restrooms. My hopes were pretty short lived when the app kept prompting me to connect the lightbulb to a Wi-Fi router first before I could connect my phone and control the A19 bulb. Now some of the campgrounds where I’ve car camped at in the past have had a wireless connection within their park. This particular park may have, but we weren’t anywhere within range if they did have a Wi-Fi connection. Don’t get me wrong, the bulb still turned on to the default light setting as it should have. When on the default setting, it’s just a normal LED bulb that you can still manually turn on and off with the lamp switch. The downside is that I was not able to connect my app to utilize the different light colors and dimming features that the A19 bulb is capable of. You might think that this is the end of my review, but I don’t back down very easily when I have my mind set on doing what I want.

When we returned home from our camping trip, I decided to set up another one of my tents out in the front yard to test out the full features that this bulb is capable of. Though the router was at the far back end of our house, I was still able to pick up a low Wi-Fi connection that was used to set up the Android app and control my LIFX Color 1000 A19 bulb. DSC03295Due to the spotty connection, sometimes changing the light colors and dimming was delayed by just a matter of seconds. But I have to say that being able to change the color and light intensity of this bulb REALLY created a cool ambiance within my little faux-campsite! The amount of color options (up to 16 Million) this bulb provides is absolutely astounding!! At 1,055 lumens (equivalent to a 75 watt bulb), I was very impressed how bright the light was, in addition to how dim it could become. But the thing I appreciated the most was that you could scroll through the full color spectrum, and then quickly switch over to the White spectrum and adjust it between the 1,000 different shades of White. I even created a pretty cool looking camp-esque feel by setting it to 2750k and using the Flicker function, which mimicked a flickering candle or campfire. After using the bulb for a couple of hours, I noticed when turning it off that the plastic diffuser tip on the bulb immediately becomes cool to the touch. The main portion of the light bulb appears to be a ceramic material that is still very hot when you shut it off, but really works well to dissipate the heat that this bulb puts off.

After getting the app connected and using the bulb at my own home, I realized that it could certainly be used for camping if there happened to be a Wi-Fi connection at the campground… or if you really wanted to get nerdy with it, you could bring along a small Mi-Fi device just for that purpose. I likely would never go that far with it just to use a light bulb, but the possibility is still there. DSC03294While testing the A19 bulb, I also accidentally dropped it onto the tile floor from about a foot off the ground. My heart absolutely dropped as I honestly figured it would have destroyed the bulb beyond use. Being that it is an LED bulb and not incandescent, it survived the drop with little more than a couple of scratches on the casing. The durability and capability of this light is so unbelievably awesome! I will certainly be utilizing this light bulb around my own home for area lighting and background ambiance lighting for movies. I not only would recommend this light to others, I can see this being a viable replacement for your existing light fixtures around the home.
