Paria Outdoor Products Bryce 2P Ultralight Tent (Review)
I have so many various styles of tents in my gear collection. Some are heavier 8 person tents that are meant more for “car camping” trips, while others are smaller and fit anywhere from 4 to 5 people, all the way down to a single 1 person tent. I have taken larger tents for small groups and simply separated all the pieces between those of us who are hiking. But most of the trips I go on are backpacking trips, where smaller tents tend to lend themselves better to a lighter pack weight.
Normally the best tent option I have had in the past has been my Catoma EBNS 1 person tent. Though this is a tested tent that is currently under contract with both the US Army as well as the Marines, it is not the lightest (at 5.6lbs) solo tent option. It can also make you feel a little claustrophobic at times, due to how small it is inside. I had been looking at other options for a while, but being a relatively financially conscious guy “most” of the time, I had not really found something that fit well in the categories of weight, internal space, construction, and cost effectiveness.
But I had the chance earlier this year to add to add the Bryce 2P Ultralight Tent from Paria Outdoor Products to my camping gear. I’m no stranger at all to this small company based out of the mountains of Colorado and their excellent gear, as I have used most all their current products a good deal over the past year. That includes my second Appalachian Trail hike in May of this year, along with several other hiking & camping trips down here in my home state of Florida. So far, I have had zero failures or problems with any of their items that I’ve used while out on the trails… and the quality and design of each product is really what gets me pumped not only about their current line of outdoor essentials, but also about what the future of their company and gear offerings might look like!
So far, I’ve only managed to find one single thing that I would personally like to see on the Bryce 2P tent, and that is a small gear loft. While the design of this particular ultralight tent doesn’t give much options for my said request, I did find one little area right above the entrance that could possibly allow for a removable gear loft to be added if it connected to the right stitched points of the tent netting. I also noticed that they included two fairly large sized internal pockets near the entrance as well, which may be making up for the lack of the gear loft, which is still a nice touch to detail. At the apex of the tent itself, they did include a small hanging loop point to hang your lantern from when you lay down at night. Other than my preferred gear loft, Paria Outdoor Products left absolutely NOTHING wanting in the design of this tent! They even managed to include a lightweight footprint, a rain fly (with vestibule area), 1-piece collapsible pole set, twelve aluminum alloy Y-stakes, reflective Dyneema guy line, aluminum alloy line tensioners, and two pole repair splints. If that wasn’t huge enough at their extremely affordable current price point of $160, they also included three cinchable stuff sacks with their reflective Dyneema line; one for the poles, one for the stakes & guy lines, and a stuff sack that comfortably fits the entire tent and all accessories inside with a little room left to spare. And probably my favorite aspect of this tent is their color choice of bright yellow on the rain fly (with a 3,000 mm PU coating and factory taped seams), which really amplifies the outside light and makes the tent feel rightfully larger than it is… and Paria’s choice in using lightweight, but durable 20 denier rip-stop polyester (instead of nylon) for the rain fly, and a 70 denier polyester for both the tent floor & footprint. This entire tent weighs in at only 4 lbs 13 oz with everything, but has the lighter trail option of 3 lbs 14 oz (without the stakes or footprint) and an ULTRALIGHT option of 3 lbs for the footprint, poles & rainfly (without the tent body or stakes).
For this price range and quality that Paria Outdoor Products is offering, I personally believe you would be amiss to pass over this tent if you are in the market for something smaller & lighter than what you may already be using. And since they include a 1 year manufactures warranty and fantastic customer service, why don’t you give them a try and make your next camping trip even more enjoyable!
